Broadacres Ranch is committed to providing an unforgettable fishing experience for every visitor. Our coveted Orvis endorsement guarantees that we 'offer world class hospitality and feature a main lodge and common area for meals and camaraderie, quality cuisine, fly shop, and knowledgeable, professional guides.' Broadacres is committed to meeting and exceeding those requirements in every aspect of its operations, especially its fly-fishing.
Starting in 1999, Broadacres embarked on a substantial habitat improvement effort on the waters of the Rio Grande and Shallow Creek. Years of work have vastly improved the holding water on the property, significantly increased the wild fish population, and generated some of the finest fly-fishing available in the American West. Broadacres Ranch does not stock or feed; therefore, flyfishers enjoy a truly pure experience with the area's natural trout and habitat. In order to protect this environment, Broadacres only allows catch and release fishing with barbless hooks.
Broadacres Ranch also boasts impressively diverse fishing opportunities. Anglers can tackle the big water of the rushing Rio Grande River for impressive browns or rainbows right on the ranch, embark on a fishing adventure to beautiful backcountry streams to catch brookies or cutthroats, or develop their casting skills on one of our three lakes.
Waters:
The Rio Grande: Broadacres Ranch is located just 25 miles from the headwaters of the Rio Grande River, one of Colorado's best-kept secrets. Our 2.5 miles of private banks of the Rio Grande provide rare opportunities to fish the predominantly private and inaccessible upper section of the basin. Brown trout and rainbow trout are the most commonly caught species on the river. They are typically 12-14 inches, but trophies up to 25 inches are not at all rare.
Shallow Creek: Shallow Creek is a classic freestone tributary to the Rio Grande. It flows through the north side of our property for 1.5 miles before meeting the Rio Grande. Brook trout and brown trout are abundant.
Broadacres Lake and Sleeping Ute Lake: Our on-grounds lakes provide a change of pace from the rushing waters of the Rio Grande and Shallow Creek and offer trophy browns, brookies, and rainbows. Additionally, we have a smaller lake with very aggressive rainbows that's a perfect place to practice your cast or to get kids hooked on the great sport of flyfishing. Float tubes are available for hours of relaxed fishing on the lakes.
Backcountry and Float Access: Broadacres Ranch provides backcountry-guided trips on about 50 miles of backcountry streams in the Rio Grande National Forest. We also guide float trips on the upper 30 miles of the Rio Grande River. These waters can offer an adventurous change of pace from the on-grounds fishing and give you an opportunity to land browns, brookies, rainbows, or perhaps even a cutthroat or two.
Equipment:
Equipment is available for purchase at our on-grounds fly shop, the Wooley Bugger. All Orvis fishing products are available to guests during their stay at a 15% discount. We also have equipment available for rent.
Guide Staff:
Our experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly guides are capable of catering to everyone from novices to well-seasoned flyfishers. Our policy is, at most, a two guest to one guide ratio to ensure attentive guiding paired with a friendly and personal atmosphere. History:
The historic Broadacres Ranch was first homesteaded in 1891 by Scottish emigrants John Grant and his daughter Elsie and named 'Glenmora.' In those days, Creede was still a wild silver mining town, inhabited by the likes of Calamity Jane, Doc Holliday and Bat Masterson. During the winter months, huge ice blocks were cut from the Ranch's largest lake, Broadacres Lake, and supplied area hotels and saloons with ice, hence our ice tong brand. The ice house, along with the original Ranch buildings still exist today. In November of 1998, Broadacres Ranch was purchased by a family of fly fishing and outdoors enthusiasts. They immediately began to rebuild and restore many of the Ranch's buildings, carefully maintaining their historic architecture while endowing them with modern conveniences and luxurious furnishings. The results of their work are first class accommodations with the look and feel of the Old West, and fly fishing to rival that offered anywhere in the U.S.
