The Lodge has also had major exposure on Australian, New Zealand and American prime television, with shows such as Greg Norman's Clear Water Big Fish series, Rex Hunt's Outdoor Show, Fly Fishing the World and ABC World of Sports.

The 'who's who' of world fly fishing have all stayed at Tongariro Lodge, along with famous celebrities, such as Robert Mitchum, Liam Neeson, Larry Hagman, Timothy Dalton, Malcolm Fraser and many others. The Queen Mother and many Presidents, such Jimmy Carter, have also cast a line in this famous river.

Highs

  • Located just north of Turangi, on the banks of the Tongariro River and close to the southern shores of Lake Taupo, Tongariro Lodge has earned an excellent reputation for gourmet dining, the finest accommodation, quality outdoor activities and the most experienced fly fishing guides in New Zealand.
  • You can have a go at heli-fishing! Tongariro Lodge guides are the most experienced heli-fishing operators in New Zealand and from October to April, you can enjoy this ultimate New Zealand wilderness fly fishing experience from the Lodge. The lodge has special access to large areas of private land that provides anglers with helicopter access to 14 wilderness rivers, and includes up to 60 kilometres of trophy fly fishing for brown and rainbows.
  • Offering world-class, year-round trout fishing, you can land double-digit trout in January to March and for those anglers in the know, the spring and early summer period (October through to Christmas), has always been a premium time as the rainbows and browns tend to feed more aggressively and be less spooky early season.
  • Aside from the incredible fishing opportunities, there are numerous and unique adrenaline-filled activities on offer. Have a go at jet-boating, scenic helicopter and fixed-wing flights over volcanic craters and lakes, hunting, shooting, horse riding and more!
  • The lodge is also an exceptional venue for weddings, retreats and conferences, with stunning landscape and wilderness right on the doorstep.

Lows

  • Be aware that if you're making a booking from somewhere other than New Zealand, that all charges must be paid to Tongariro Lodge in NZ dollars only.
