Fly Fishing in Idaho

Idaho is home to more than 10 blue-ribbon trout streams. It offers anglers a variety of fishing terrain with high mountain lakes and streams along with lowland desert reservoirs.

When planning a fly fishing trip to Idaho, rivers to keep in mind are:

  • Henrys Fork: This is one of the most famous fishing rivers in the United States. Running through eastern Idaho, the 150 miles of river have every type of water from white water sections to medium flow sections. Along with the South Fork, it has the best reputation for dry fly fishing. Large rainbows and rainbow-cutthroat hybrids can be found on the upper sections with brown trout added in below Mesa Falls.
  • Silver Creek: Flowing through central Idaho, this fertile creek has difficult, changing currents, but travels through beautiful scenery of farmland with mountains in the distance. The most famous section is the Nature Conservancy's Silver Creek Preserve. Though known for its tough fishing, anglers are rewarded with the possibility of catching trout up to 24 inches. Rainbow, brown, and brook trout, along with the native whitefish, are all available for catching.
  • Big Wood River: Averaging 75 feet in width, the Big Wood River has a large amount of rainbow trout and is well stocked with brown and brook trout as well. Its conditions depend on run-off from mountain snow or rain.
  • Salmon River: This river is famous for having great white water rafting, but it is also known for its steelhead and trout fishing, with fly fishing popular for all species. Fishing is remote in the middle fork, but anglers have many access points in the lower part of the Salmon.
