Fly Fishing in Montana

Montana provides anglers with an abundance of fly fishing opportunities.

Some of the most famous rivers in Montana can be found in the southwest part of the state with the natural trout streams flowing through valleys and mountains. Here anglers have access to the Blackfoot, the Bitterfoot, Beaverhead, Big Hole, and Rock Creek. The rivers' movement through diverse scenery and terrain can be helpful when there is bad weather or spring run off as it may be occurring in one river and not the others. The numerous amount and proximity of rivers give visitors the chance to easily see a lot.

The Yellowstone, the Bighorn, and the Madison are found in Southwestern Montana, which is known for its premier trout fishing.

Northwest Montana has beautiful scenery, but few rivers that consistently provide good trout and easy access. Because of this, the rivers do not have the same fishing pressure found elsewhere in the state and anglers may end up with a river to themselves. The trout in this area tends to be smaller, but the ability to catch the native bull trout is a common draw.

The central part of the state is not frequently visited by anglers as there is a lack of quality trout. However, for those looking to fish here, the most well known river in this area is the Missouri.

Eastern Montana is far from the mountains, which limits the trout fishing. But there are plenty of warm water species to catch.

The Big Sky State is also home to Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park, where out of state anglers do not need a license to fish. Both of these parks lend themselves to wonderful fly fishing experiences.

Yellowstone National Park has over a hundred lakes a thousand miles of streams. Cutthroat trout, grayling and mountain whitefish are native to the park, but rainbow, brook, and lake trouts have also been added to the rivers.
