Environmental & Social Practices

Environment

At Henry’s Fork Lodge, the waterways of the Western United States represent the heart of our life’s work and favorite pastime.

We’re passionate about protecting them and have a long history of advocacy and support for organizations dedicated to ensuring their sustained health.

We’ve advocated for constructive solutions to protecting the Island Park region and have organized a coalition of like-minded groups to protect Island Park from unwise or large-scale development.

OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD

As passionate advocates of catch and release for trout (and for protecting all fish species), Henry’s Fork Lodge is committed to serving only sustainable seafood. We adhere to the recommendations of Seafood Watch to do our part to help make the seafood marketplace environmentally, economically and socially sustainable.

Conservation

“Few businesses have done so much to make fishing better on the Henry's Fork and across the West, than Henry's Fork Lodge.

The Lodge has generously housed Trout Unlimited board meetings, staff retreats and other informal gatherings, where big ideas are hatched to improve Idaho’s late season flows, or to recover wild and native trout to other fabled Gem state rivers. Many in the fly fishing business talk about the need to protect healthy rivers and clean water.

The Henrys Fork Lodge bakes conservation into their business model and no other business has done so much for Idaho’s lands and waters as the Henrys Fork Lodge.”

CHRIS WOOD

Trout Unlimited, President & CEO

History

Designed by award-winning architect (and avid fly fisherman) Joseph Esherick, Henry’s Fork Lodge embodies warm, inviting hospitality.

The lodge blends with the beauty of its natural surroundings and feels true to the world-class outdoor adventure experiences that have attracted anglers for decades.

It’s a place where guests are welcomed like family and many return year after year.

Whether it’s reading by the fire, or sharing stories over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the expansive porch with the Tetons in the distance, it’s the perfect place to unwind following the day’s adventures.

Your Manager, Amelie Kappes

Amelie Kappes has been overseeing lodge operations since 2002 and it’s her amazing attention to detail that makes our guests feel so at home.

Amelie met her husband Dan (a former fly fishing guide) at the lodge her first year working here.

They and their two sons, Ben and James, take every opportunity they can to fish the Henry’s Fork and surrounding waters. Amelie’s favorite is Hebgen Lake for its large rainbows and browns, and the famous 'gulpers'.

Lakes

Sometimes overlooked are nearby lakes that produce both big fish and surprising dry fly fishing. Among the best are:

Nearby Henry’s Lake is Idaho’s most popular fishing lake and produces huge rainbow/cutthroat hybrids and the state record brook trout.

Hebgen Lake is a fantastic dry fly lake with 'gulpers', large rainbows and browns that cruise and gobble prolific mayfly hatches all summer.

Quake Lake is another great dry fly lake with a huge variety of hatches in a magnificent setting.

The Fishing

The finest dry fly stream in the world

We built Henry’s Fork Lodge at the heart of America’s premier fly fishing.

Voted #1 out of the top 100 streams in the country by Trout Unlimited, the Henry’s Fork flows right behind the lodge, offering guests epic fishing just steps away.

The most famous stretch of trout fishing water in the world, the Railroad Ranch is just two miles upstream and the renowned Box Canyon stretch is 10 miles away.

We’re serious about fly fishing, so guests will fish only for wild fish (no hatchery stockers), making every outing a genuine fly fishing experience.

Something for everyone

Every angler dreams of someday fishing the Henry’s Fork, and even the most experienced anglers can be guaranteed a challenge.

But novices will also find miles of the lower Henry’s Fork that offer easy, accessible fishing, especially with the help of a fishing guide. We will help pair you with an expert guide that matches your abilities and fishing preferences.

With four fly shops and dozens of guides to choose from, we can ensure you’re in good hands. Your guide may start out as a teacher and coach, but is likely to be counted as a friend by the end of the day.

Private fishing

Sheridan Ranch has a spring creek and lake, both of which hold abundant big rainbows. Access is by fee and is limited, but can be arranged by the fly shops. Its highly productive fishing has been the highlight of many trips to the lodge.
